Opposite Land
Waiting somewhere ยท Car ยท Home
What you'll need
nothing. Zero. This is the waiting-room mission.
Say this to start
"We just landed in Opposite Land! Here, everything means the OPPOSITE. When I say jump, you freeze. When I say freeze, you jump. Ready?"
Set it up (30 seconds)
- Stand up (or stay seated in a waiting room, use hands instead: clap means still, still means clap).
- Agree on 2 opposite pairs.
- Go.
How to play
Start in normal land: say "jump," they jump. 3-4 turns, easy wins. Then announce Opposite Land. Now "jump" means freeze and "freeze" means jump. Call commands slowly at first, then faster. Laughing is part of the game.
Ask this while you play
- "What does 'jump' mean in Opposite Land?"
- "Your body wanted to jump, but you stopped it! How did you DO that?"
- "Should we add a new opposite pair?"
Watch for
The wobble, where the body starts the wrong move and stops halfway. That wobble IS the exercise. Don't call it a mistake, call it a save: "Ooh, great save!"
Rescue moves
If frustrated
Back to normal land for 3 turns, then just ONE opposite command at a time, slow.
If bored
They become the caller and try to trick you. Fail dramatically.
Age dial
One more round?
Whisper commands. Quiet + opposite is surprisingly hard and surprisingly funny.
Why this worksTap to see the research behind this game.
Practices stopping a first impulse, the skill under every "wait," "not now," and "hands to yourself."
Games where the body must do the opposite of the word practice impulse control. Kids who play these games handle frustration and waiting better. Versions of this game are used by child-development researchers around the world, including a Japanese classic where you must NOT look where the finger points.
How to end
"Opposite Land is closing! Last one: when I say goodbye, you say... hello!" End on the laugh.
